THE CIRCLE OF LIFE 3

FMS

Nobody is exactly sure what all the causes of FMS are. However there are several underlying factors that appear to be implicated. Auto-immune and Anti-inflammatory:

There appears to be an underlying inflammatory and auto-immune basis to FMS that is not so severe as to be labeled rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. Anything that triggers your immune system can cause inflammation and therefore chronic muscle pain. Basically your immune system seems to be attacking your own body. Yeast, abnormal bacteria and parasites can also play a role in this process. Again, any abnormal viral, bacterial or fungal infection can cause the immune system to react. Often once food and other allergens are removed and the overgrowth of yeast, parasites and abnormal bacterial are controlled, FMS sufferers improve dramatically. It has been known for years that parasitic infections can trigger auto-immunity and arthritis.

Already research is showing that abnormal bacterium, when overgrown in the bowel, may effect energy production and cause auto-immunity. Other possible contributing factors are listed as toxic exposure, including pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals. Significant pesticide or chemical exposure may trigger an autoimmune response.

Many rheumatologists seem to favor the theory of an abnormality in the brain that triggers the overproduction of substance P. Metabolic abnormalities are common and most FMS sufferers who are evaluated have intercellular deficiencies of the nutrients, which are vital for the normal function of muscles. There are many factors, which are important to normal muscle function. Remember that the energy you muscles need must be manufactured in the mitochondria via the Krebs cycle. If you Krebs cycle is not functioning properly, your muscles will not function well either. Many FMS patients are low in these nutrients on an intercellular basis, and these include magnesium, calcium, potassium and amino acids.

The list of botanicals listed below are formulated to maximize your Krebs cycle and to provide relief and will work with the diet and all other aspects of the plan as formulated on this web site. It is important however, to consult your primary health care practitioner for consultation before you start this program. There can be drug interactions with current medications you are now on, as well as side effects and your physician is qualified to assess this for you.

A little about Amino Acids. They are one of the most poorly understood essential nutritional factors. We need a certain amount of amino acids on a daily basis. We get them through our protein sources be they animal or vegetable. The basic component of protein is called an AMINO ACID. Our body breaks down protein we eat into individual amino acids and then utilizes them for a wide range of functions within the body. These functions include.

1. The manufacture of brain chemicals and antidepressant hormones.
2. Normal function of the Krebs Cycle,
3. Many of the hormones, which control the function of organs such as thyroid, testes, ovaries and adrenals, are made from amino acids. THEY ARE VITAL TO THE NORMAL FUNCTION OF MUSCLES FOR SEVERAL REASONS.

If you do not have the appropriate amino acids your Krebs cycle will begin to diminish. When this occurs, your overall energy and muscle function will decrease. Your muscle cells no longer have the energy to pump in the nutrients they need and they cannot pump out the waste products. Also, if your bowel is suffering from an overgrowth of yeast, you cannot process the nutrients your body needs to function properly.

Antioxidants: Muscle function and our energy production are absolutely dependent on the maintenance of proper levels of antioxidants to protect the cell from metabolic damage. This damage occurs through normal wear and tear, and in that we damage ourselves by just living and breathing every day. This is why taking nutritional supplements is so important as in CO-Q-10, and Glutathione. Antioxidants are usually obtained from our food and the best sources are vegetables and fruits. The vast majority of FMS sufferers who have been tested are low in total antioxidant function and are low in multiple essential antioxidants such as Co-Enzyme Q 10, Lipoic Acid, the Carotene'', Vitamin C, Co-Enzyme 1, just to name a few. Starting on supplementation of antioxidants improves your antioxidant function.

Remember that if you have a yeast problem you cannot eat large amounts of fruit. Also those with hypoglycemia may not be a able to tolerate increased intake of fruit. However, most patients can tolerate large amounts of vegetables without difficulty. Improvement in antioxidant levels and function will be the most important single medical breakthrough of the 21st century.

The information above and below is according to Dr. E. Conley author of America Exhausted a book Wellness Train recommends that everybody read. Link will be on the next page to Dr. Conley's Clinic.

Glucosamine Sulfate: Provides one of the factors you body needs to repair cartilage and collagen. This is good for both joints and for the collagen that is important in muscle function.

L Tryptophan and 50HTP: L'Trytophan is the amino acid that is important in making normal serotonin in the brain. 5HTP has been available for several years but the data on it is incomplete and in some people it causes gastrointestinal disturbances.

Glutathione: It is a Tripeptide made from the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. It is a primary antioxidant in humans and very important in the detoxification process. It is now known that chronic viral infections deplete the body's stores of glutathione.

How to Improve your Levels

Food: WHEY Whey is a protein found in milk. Cold processed whey is one of the best sources of the compound gamma glutamycystine which leads to an increase of glutathione levels in the body.

Cysteine rich foods include meat, yogurt, wheat germ, and eggs. (remember however, that milk, eggs and wheat are the three most common food allergens in the USA. Which can also cause symptoms of FMS) Going through an elimination diet is recommended.

Glutamine: Glutamine is another amino acid that is important in the production of glutathione. T is also important in bowel health. It is usually well tolerated in two or five grams but remember to start low and work your way up. As with an recommendation, please consult your health care practitioner prior to starting any supplements recommended in this plan)

Lipoic Acid: It is in involved in the conversion of carbohydrates to energy via the Krebs Cycle. This takes place using lipoic acid along with the B Vitamins, thiamine and niacin. It is also an important antioxidant which is both water and fat soluble. Which means that it is effective against a wide range of free radicals as compared with Vitamin C which is only water soluble and Vitamin E which is only fat soluble. We obtain Alpha Lipoic Acid from red meat. It appears to be safe in routine use with no reported side effects in over 30 years of treatment with no known drug or nutrient interactions. The only drawback is COST.

Co-Enzyme Q 10: IT is an important nutrient in the production of energy. It is vital for stage 111, the electron transport of the Krebs Cycle, to function properly. It also serves as an antioxidant for the entire Krebs cycle. It is a potent free radical scavenger in the mitochondria and other areas absorbing free radicals and therefore preventing or reducing damage to the cell. Daily usage of the body produces damage, as well as stress, smoking, chemicals etc.

Creatine: it is made in the body from the amino acids methionine, gylcine and arginine. It is also obtained in foods such as beef, herring and salmon. You would be to eat approximately 9 pounds of meat to get 20 grams of creatine, therefore it appears to be important and deficiencies in methionine, gylcine or arginine may lead to deficiencies in creatine. It is stored in the body as creatine phosphate. It improves performance in athletes during high intensity intermittent exercises such as sprinting and weight lifting. It also increases endurance.

Abuse of Creatine includes: Rapid, severe weight loss, and massive dehydration from fluid restrictions and / or cathartics. Creatine has been found in some research to increase the risks of muscle cramps. Possibly secondary to dehydration as it forces more fluid into the muscle cells. However there is not an apparent side effect of creatine but a more of a side effect of not obtaining enough water. If you have kidney disases, you should not start on creatine and you should not without the advice of a qualified physician who knows your individual case.

L-Carnitine: it is a vitamin like compound responsible for the transport of long chain fatty acids in the mitochondria. (Which is the power plant area within the cell) It is essential because it transports fatty acids into the mitochondria. The more poorly you are able to get fatty acids into the mitochondria, the lower your energy. The heart and skeletal muscles depend primarily on fatty acids as a source of energy. Normal function for your muscles is dependent on the proper transport of fatty acids into tissues. This should be of particular interest to those of you with FMS because the slower the transport of fatty acids into your skeletal muscles, the more poorly your muscles will function. Carnitine is in meat and dairy products. The redder the meat, the higher the Carnitine content. Grains, fruits and vegetables contain little Carnitine. People with FMS have problems utilizing fatty acids normally for energy production. If you have elevated levels of triglycerides and cholesterol then a trial of L-Carnitine seems to be indicated. Remember that no one nutrient will solve FMS or chronic fatigue. Carnitine seems to be an important nutrient, and should be part of your treatment plan.

N.A.D.H. - Is commonly referred to as Co-Enzyme 1 and is found naturally in all living cells. NADA is at the start of the electron transport or phase 111 of the Krebs Cycle. If you are low in NADH it may short circuit that phase of the Krebs Cycle, not allowing you to produce the energy you need to run properly. NADH is a very potent antioxidant. Substances like NADH, Co-Enzyme Q 10 keep damages to a minimum. Given the fact that no significant side effects have been reported, a safe dosage would be 10 mg for a ninety-day period. If significant improvement is noticed, then stay on it. If not, then discontinue it. Always consult with your health care practitioner before taking ANY supplement.

More About the Essential Aminos

L Cartinine: A unique amino acid which converts stored body fat into energy for the muscles, including the heart. L-Carnitine is responsible for maintenance for maintenance of energy metabolism throughout every cell in the body. It assists in the transport of essential fatty acids through the cell membranes.

L Gluthione: A primary detoxification route is the conjugation of glutathione (a tripeptide composed of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine). Many toxic chemicals, including heavy metals, solvents, and pesticides are fat-soluble. This makes it very difficult for the body to eliminate them. The primary way the body eliminates fat-soluble compounds is by excreting them in the bile. The problem is that ninety-nine percent of the bile, including the excreted toxins, is reabsorbed. Fortunately, the body is able to convert the fat-soluble toxins into a water-soluble form. The body performs this feat with the help of glutathione. Glutathione is also important anti-oxidant.

The Anti Candida Diet

The following Anti-Cabndida diet is taken from the Yeast Connection Handbook by William G. Croook MD. You may order any of Dr. Crook's work by calling 1-800-227-2627

Go to your kitchen and get rid of the sugar, corn syrup, white bread and other white flour products, soda pop, cereals, and all the sweet fat snack foods.

To overcome candida related health problems you need to avoid them all. Replace them with more vegetables, including some you may not usually eat. Go to the health food store and buy grain alternatives including, amaranth, buckwheat and quinoa. (You will find instructions for cooking and preparing them in THE YEAST CONNECTION COOK BOOK)

Get rid of the processed and prepared junk foods, replace them with small amounts of live, walnut, flaxseed, sesame and other unprocessed unrefined oils. Buy fresh and frozen vegetables, fresh meat, poultry, fish, seafood, eggs, olive oil, pure butter, sardines packaged in oil. And try to guy organically grown foods that have not been chemically contaminated.

What you can Eat during the first three weeks

Grain Alternatives are amaranth, Buckwheat, Quinoa. Breads, biscuits and muffins should be made with baking powder or baking soda as a leavening agent. Do not use YEAST unless you pass the yeast challenge.

FOODS TO AVOID

Sugar and sugar containing foods, sucrose, fructose, maltose, lactose, glycogen, mannitol, sorbitol, galactose, monosaccharides and polysaccharide. Also avoid honey, molasses, maple syrup, date sugar and turbinado sugar.
Packaged and Processed Foods
Canned, bottled, boxed and other packaged and processed foods usually contain
sugar products and other hidden ingredients.

YOU WILL NOT ONLY NEED TO AVOID THESE SUGAR CONTAITNING FOODS THE EARLY WEEKS OF YOUR DIET, BUT YOU WILL NEED TO AVOID THEM FOREVER.

Avoid Yeast containing Foods the first ten days of your diet

Baked Goods: Breads, Pastries, and other raised baked goods. Cheeses: All cheeses. Moldy cheeses, such as Roquefort, are the worst, Condiments: Sauces, and vinegar containing foods. Mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire, Accent, steak, barbecue, chili, shrimp, and soy sauces: Pickles, pickled vegetables, relish, green olives, sauerkraut, horseradish, mince meat and tamari. Vinegar and all kinds of vinegar containing foods such as mayonnaise and salad dressing.

Malt Products: Malted milk drinks, cereals and candy.

Processed and smoked meats: Pickled and smoked meats and fish, including bacon, ham, sausages, hot dogs, corned beef, pastrami and picked tongue.

Edible fungi: All types of mushrooms, morels and truffles

Melons: Watermelon, honeydew melon and especially cantaloupe.

Dried and Candied fruits: Raisins, apricots, dates, prunes, prunes, figs, pineapple.

Leftovers: Molds grow faster and better in leftover food unless it is properly refrigerated. Freezing is better.

After you have avoided yeast containing foods for ten days you can find out if you are sensitive to yeast, which you can obtain from a health food store.

If it does not bother you, eat some moldy cheese. If consuming theses yeasty foods triggers symptoms, stay away from them for several weeks and ten you can experiment further. Truly yeast free diets are impossible to come by because you can find yeast and molds on surfaces of all kinds of fruits, vegetables and grains. Once you find out that you are sensitive to yeast you will have to be your own judge. During the first three weeks of the diet, avoid fruits. The sugar in fruits combined with fiber is more quickly released and may trigger yeast overgrowth. But to see if they bother you run through a fruit challenge.

Take a small bite of a banana. Ten minutes later eat a second bite. If no reaction occurs within the hour, eat the whole thing. If you tolerate the banana without developing symptoms, try strawberries, pineapple or apple the next day.

FEEL YOUR WAY along. If NO symptoms follow the fruit challenges, chances are you can eat fruit in moderation.

WHAT YOU SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT DRINK

Water: You should drink eight glasses of water a day.

Fruit Juices: They are a no no, most fruit juices including frozen, bottled or canned, are prepared from fruits that have been allowed to stand in bins, barrels and other containers for periods ranging from an hour up to several days or weeks. Most fruits used for juice contain some level of mold.

Coffee and Tea: The are prepared from plant products and they are subject to mold contamination although most people seem to tolerate them. To decide you can experiment.. If you cannot get along without it, limit your intake to one or two cups a day.

Alcoholic Beverages: Wines, beers and other alcoholic beverages contain high levels of yeast contamination so if you are allergic to yeast it is best to avoid them. Another reason to avoid them is that they contain large amounts of quick acting carbohydrate. If you drink such beverages, you will be feeding your yeast.

Diet Drinks: These possess no nutritional value and moreover, they are usually sweetened with aspartame (Nutrasweet) which causes adverse reactions to many people. They may also contain caffeine, food coloring, phosphates and other ingredients. Which disagree with many individuals. However, as they do not contain mold, people with Candida related problems may tolerate them. If you do drink them, use them sparingly.

For further information please refer to THE YEAST CONNECTION COOKBOOK by Dr. G. Crook, MD. 1-800-227-2627 You can follow the whole supplemental plan, or take the ones you feel will help your body.

It's up to you but remember to please consult your health care practitioner before you take ANY supplements. These are not recommended as a cure for FMS, but in many cases have helped a lot of people. Botanicals are generally well tolerated by people but remember that they work slowly and that you have to give them at least three months to notice a difference. Good Luck and Be Well.

MANAGING PAIN
Full Article:

Pain is universal. You can trace its trail through time-- from a toothache evident in fossil remains of a human jawbone to today's drugstore shelves packed with pain relievers. Almost half of all Americans seek treatment for pain each year, 7 million from newly diagnosed back pain alone.

Pain is complex. Sometimes it's beneficial. A sharp stab alerts you to injury when you burn your finger, hurt your back or break a bone. But other pain--the day-after-day ache of arthritis or the anguish of cancer--serves no useful purpose, and its relentlessness can become overwhelming.

Above all, pain is unique. The varieties of misery are as many as its sufferers. Your pain is an interplay of your own particular biological, psychological and cultural makeup.
