Do your darts have an attitude?

You have probably never considered that darts can have attitudes, well not in the sense that they have any judgement, but they do have an opinion and it is you the dart player that provides that opinion.

When you put those short stems in and pear shape flights, or those long stems with standard flights, then you may add a flight protector or a metal ring on the shaft or many combinations of them all, that’s when you give your darts an attitude.

You only have to watch Phil Taylor throw to know that his darts do not go into the board in the normal way, they hang downwards, Sid Waddle raves on about this style calling it reverse stacking, it is only achieved by using long stems and very small flights, the flights do not drag through the air and cause the dart hitting the board to fall downward at the flight end, I use a medium stem with a standard flight this gives the dart an almost true trajectory going through the air in an arc and hitting the target with the dart slightly above horizontal, this gives plenty of room to throw the next dart underneath and use the first for a guide, in Phil’s case he may go above the triple twenty and then he has to throw downstairs at the 19’s because he has covered the twenty bed.

There is no wrong or right way for a dart to land in the board after all it’s the scoring that counts, Phil is the most accurate scoring player of the modern game but his style is very hard to copy and will seem very unusual to many players, I have embarked on this train of thought because I am asked many times “should I use pear shape flights” or “should I use a shorter stem” well the answer can only be found by experimenting, I spent quite a lot of time with the scissors cutting bitts of my old flights trying to see if they would get to that target accurately, I played with pear shape flights for years and it is only in recent years that I have changed to standard flights, I would have no hesitation in changing again if I thought for one moment it would improve my consistency.

I suppose you never thought of it but darts do have attitudes, invented, created and nurtured by their owners.
