Partner Cities of Maebaru
Toshishige Yamasaki Curriculum Coordinator at
Itoshima High School
Maebaru city, in which Itoshima High School is located, has made
friendly city partnership affiliation with three big cities in the world
under the leadership of present city mayor, Mr. Yoshihide Haruta: with
Escondido California in the US in July 1996, with Kimhae City in Korea in
October 1997, and Qingpu Shanghai in August 1998. Escondido, Kimhae,
Qingpu and Maebaru enjoy four distinctive cultures with four different
languages in four different regions of the world, but they have something
in common: They are located near a big cosmopolitan city. Escondido is
north of San Diego, Kimhae is west of Pusan, Qingpu is west of Shanghai,
and Maebaru is west of Fukuoka. They provide the workers in the cities
with food and residence, and all of them are growing fast from rural towns
into industrial residential areas. In the process of their growing
up, the four cities may find benefits of development and face similar
problems such as the city planning with new roads, water supply, trash, or
some social conflicts between the people who were born there and the
people who moved in, especially problems in the area of educating young
people who will be the mainstay in the society of this globalization age,
and it is worth while to exchange ideas of how the other cities recognize
and actually deal with those problems from different perspectives.
I visited Escondido in the summer of 1998, Quingpu in October of
1999. I'd like to describe my visits to those cities. There must be a lot
of misunderstandings in the following pages about those cities. I
appreciate your comments and opinions: Toshishige
Yamasaki.
